Poetry harnesses the power of the human experience. It is a universal language steered by an emotive morality, transcending political and historical narratives with a multifaceted perspective.New York Times-bestselling author Marjory Wentworth’s new poetry book entitled “One River, One Boat” is out on Aug. 12. It’s her love song to South Carolina.

“South Carolina is my home and always will be,” Wentworth told The Post and Courier. “I’ll be writing poems about South Carolina for the rest of my life.”

Wentworth, who moved to Charleston in 1989, served as South Carolina’s sixth poet laureate from 2003 to 2020. Cities, states and regions appoint poet laureates to contribute poetry for official occasions and build community programming geared toward reading and writing poetry. The position is as varied as it is inspired, leaving room for the individual to bestow an indelible mark.
